Course Content - Unit Materials
- Objectives:
-
- Be able to describe the relation between oxidation and reduction reactions.
- Be able to show how the reduction of alkenes leads to alkanes and the oxidation of alkanes leads to the formation of alkenes
- Be able to show how the reduction of carbonyls leads to the formation of alcohols and how the oxidation of alcohols leads to the formation of aldehydes ketones.
- Be able to describe how primary, secondary and tertiar alcohols lead to different reduction products.
- Be able to recognize, name and predict the physical properties of aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids, relative to the other functional groups that we have studied so far.
- Be able the predict the products for the oxidation of thiols.
- Be able to describe the function of the redox coenzymes FAD/FADH2 and NAD+/NADH.
- Be able to describe the significance of metabolic pathways, and describe the sequence of reactions that converts a CH2 into a carbonyl
