Incorporating graphics into text

You can include the following types of objects in a word-processing document or text frame:
an object drawn with the drawing tools
    a movie or sound
a clipping or item from the Scrapbook
an inserted file, for example, containing a digital photograph

Note: You can also add frames to word-processing documents.

You can place an object "inline" with text, either in the same line as the text or on its own text line. When the text moves, the object moves with it.

Or you can "float" the object or frame on top of the text in the document. Position it anywhere and it stays in the same place. Text "flows" behind the object or "wraps" around it.

Adding an inline graphic or frame

To add an object to a word-processing document or text frame so that it's inline with text:
1 Click with the I-beam pointer where you want to place the object.
Note: If you see the arrow instead of the I-beam pointer, click in the text.
2 Choose one of these methods:
If the object is on the Clipboard, choose Paste from the Edit menu.
Drag the object from the Mac OS Finder desktop or another document to the exact location you want to insert it in the AppleWorks document.

Tip: To resize an inline object, click it and drag the handle in the lower-right corner of the object.

To control how an inline object aligns with text:
    1 Select the object.
You see a single handle in the lower-right corner of the object.
2 Choose Descent from the Format menu.
3 Type the number of points you want to move the object.
Type a positive number to move the object below the line of text.
Type a negative number to move the object above the line of text.
If you don't see the Descent command in the Format menu, the object may be floating instead of inline. Change the object from floating to inline (see instructions below).

Tip: You can double-click the object to open the Descent dialog box.

Adding a floating graphic or frame

To add an object to a word-processing document so that it floats independently of the text:
1 Click the arrow in the Tools window:
If you don't see the Tools window, choose Show Tools from the Window menu.
2 Choose one of these methods:
If the object is on the Clipboard, choose Paste from the Edit menu.
Drag the object from the Finder desktop or another document to the AppleWorks document.

Note: The procedure for floating objects is different when you're working with a text frame.

Tip: You can use the drawing tools to create objects in a word-processing document. These objects are always floating.

Wrapping text around a floating object

To specify how text wraps around a floating object:
    1 Select the object.
You see handles in each corner of the object.
2 Choose Text Wrap from the Options menu, and choose a text wrap option.
If you don't see the Options menu, the object may be inline instead of floating. Change the object from inline to floating (see instructions below).

Changing objects from floating to inline and vice versa

To change an object or frame from floating to inline:
Click the object, then choose Cut from the Edit menu. Click in the text to place the insertion point where you want to position the inline object, then choose Paste from the Edit menu.

To change an object or frame from inline to floating:
Click the object, then choose Cut from the Edit menu. Click the arrow in the Tools window, then choose Paste from the Edit menu.
