About the AppleWorks interface

You see certain elements when working with AppleWorks documents.
The menu bar contains commands that you can use to perform tasks in AppleWorks. The menus in the menu bar change depending on the type of document you're working with.
Depending on the document type, the document window might display rulers that you can use to work with content in the window.

Working with "floating" windows

AppleWorks also has several floating windows that give you easy access to many options:
The Starting Points window appears by default when you start AppleWorks or close the last open AppleWorks document. Starting Points provides a quick way to create new documents or open existing documents.
The Button Bar appears by default when you start AppleWorks. It contains controls that you can use to perform common tasks quickly without using menu commands.
Other windows let you work with the AppleWorks tools, color and other visual "accents," clippings, links, and styles.

    To resize a floating window:
Position the pointer over a window corner that has the diagonal drag lines and drag.

By default, the Button Bar and Tools window are "docked" at the edge of the screen to give you more space on the screen to work with. When those windows are docked, you don't see a title bar.

To undock the Button Bar or Tools window:
Position the pointer over a window border (but not a corner with drag lines) and drag the window away from the side of the screen.

To dock the Button Bar or Tools window:
Drag it near the edge of the screen.

Tip: To keep a window from docking when you drag it close to the edge of your screen, press the Command key when you drag it.

You access different panels of the Accents, Clippings, Links, and Starting Points windows using tabs. Since you can resize most floating windows and, in some cases, add panels (and tabs), sometimes you won't be able to see all of the tabs. AppleWorks adds arrow tabs to let you scroll to tabs that aren't visible.

Tip: When more than one floating window is open, you can move from one window to the next by pressing the Option and Tab keys. Each time you press Option-Tab, AppleWorks activates the next floating window.
