Using different languages

To type and edit documents on your computer using different languages, you need to install the software for the languages you want to use. You may also need to make adjustments to your keyboard or number settings, or find out how to type special characters.

The Language Kits CD Extras folder (in the CD Extras folder on your system software CD) has different versions of SimpleText for each language, as well as extra fonts and keyboard layouts.

Displaying file and folder names in other languages

If you have files or folders on your computer whose names are in another language, those names may not be displayed properly in the Finder or in applications. If you have the appropriate language kit installed on your computer, you can make the Finder properly display filenames.

    To display foreign language filenames:
1 Open the Appearance control panel.
Open the Appearance control panel for me.
2 Click the Fonts tab and set Views to a font appropriate to the language you want to support. For example, for Japanese, choose Osaka.

If an application in another language has menus and dialog boxes that aren't displayed properly:
If you have installed language kits on your computer, use the Language Register application to specify the language the application uses.

    To specify an application's language:
1 Open the Language Register application (in the Utilities folder).
    2 Select the appropriate language.
3 Click Register and choose the application that you want to register in the dialog box.
IMPORTANT: Language Register assigns all applications with the same name to the same language. For example, if you shorten SimpleText Korean to just SimpleText and then register it in Korean, all copies of SimpleText on your computer will display in Korean.
Tip: If you use applications in many languages, you can make multiple copies of Language Register, each set to a different language. Then drag each application onto the appropriate copy of Language Register.
