Using Assistants

Assistants guide you through certain complex tasks or projects by asking you questions and then performing the necessary steps based on your answers. If you are unfamiliar with how to do something, using an Assistant saves you time.

AppleWorks has Assistants to help you with the following tasks:
    creating an address list
    creating business cards
    creating a monthly calendar
    creating award and diploma certificates
    creating and printing envelopes
    analyzing financial opportunities
creating mailing labels from a database document
adding citation footnotes to a document

To create a new document using an Assistant:
1 If Starting Points isn't open, choose Show Starting Points from the File menu.
    2 Click the Assistants tab.
    3 Click an Assistant.
4 Follow the instructions provided by the Assistant.

Tip: Documents created using the AppleWorks Assistants may contain objects that are locked or grouped. (Locking and grouping keeps text and graphics in position and prevents accidental edits.) You may have to unlock or ungroup objects so you can move and edit them.

To create labels in a database document:
Choose New Label Layout from the Layout menu and follow the instructions provided by the Assistant.

To insert a footnote with information about a book, newspaper, or other source:
1 Choose Preferences from the Edit menu, then choose Button Bar from the submenu.
2 Drag the Insert Citation button (in the Word Processing group) from the Available Buttons list to the Button Bar, then click Done.
Tip: You can also double-click the button in the list to add it to the Button Bar.
3 Click with the I-beam pointer where you want the footnote number or character to appear.
4 Click the Insert Citation button in the Button Bar, then follow the instructions in the Footnote Assistant.
Using the information you enter, AppleWorks creates a correctly formatted footnote and places it in the footnote area.
