Working with a sliced Photoshop image

GoLive's ability to work with a sliced Photoshop image gives designers a powerful tool for laying out and building Web pages. When the Photoshop Smart object links to a source image that contains slices, GoLive saves each slice as a separate Web-formatted image along with its HTML code. GoLive first prompts you for a location where it automatically creates an image_name.data folder to contain the images. For images that contain frame-based animations or JavaScript interactive sliced objects, import the file from Photoshop into GoLive. For more information about laying out a page using a sliced Photoshop image, see Introduction to page layout.

To add a sliced Smart Photoshop object:

  1. Add a Smart Photoshop object to your page. For details on adding a Smart Object to a Web page, see Adding a Smart Object to the Layout Editor.
  2. If the sliced Photoshop file is multilayered with text, GoLive opens the Variable Settings dialog box with the text of the topmost text layer. If desired, type new text to swap in place of the existing text, then click OK. (See Using a text variable in a Photoshop file.)
  3. In the Save For Web dialog box, select a predefined optimization setting from the Settings pop-up menu or create your own using the available pop-up menus. For more information about using Save For Web with a sliced image, see Optimizing images for the Web and Working with slices during optimization.
  4. You can specify a setting for all slices by using the slice select tool Slice select tool to select a slice, and then select an optimization. Since auto slices are linked together in an image, one setting applies to all the slices. User slices can have individual settings. For more information about working with slices in the Save For Web dialog box, see Applying optimization settings.

You can also specify an image size for the sliced image using the Image Size palette. (See Using the Image Size palette.)

  5. Select a destination where you want to save the target data file (image_name.data), and click Save.

To assign a link and Alt text to a slice:

  1. Select a slice in the Smart Object.
  2. In the User Slice Inspector, click the Link button New Link button and specify a file for the link destination.
  3. Specify a Target to determine where the URL will open when the slice is clicked.
  4. Type text in the Alt Text text box to assign alternative text to the slice. For more information about the uses of Alt Text, see Additional image options.

To update the optimization or size of a sliced Smart Object:

  1. Select the sliced Smart Object.
  2. In the Smart Photoshop Table Inspector, click the Settings button.
  3. Select a destination where you want to save the updated target data file (.data), and click Save.
  4. In the Save For Web dialog box, select a predefined optimization setting from the Settings pop-up menu or create your own using the available pop-up menus. For more information about using Save For Web, see Optimizing images for the Web and Working with slices during optimization.
  5. You can also specify an image size for the sliced image using the Image Size palette. (See Using the Image Size palette.)

  6. Click Save.
