The helicase is a DNA binding protein that is very important to DNA replication, repair, transcription, and recombination. These functions are vital for survival of the cell and/or organism. They are also the major tools of organism reproduction, evolution, and well-being. Fortunately, as evidenced by the positive interaction with topoisomerases, the helicases aren't alone in their job as DNA housekeeper. Helicases are only one part of a large network of proteins that exist solely to service the DNA. For this, we should all be eternally thankful because, without them, life as we know it probably wouldn't exist. |
