Problems with remote connections

If you're not sure of the state of the connection:
Open the Apple menu and choose Remote Access Status.

    If you can't connect:
Make sure your modem is turned on.
Connect a telephone to the phone line and listen for a dial tone to verify that the line is active.
Make sure your dialup modem settings are correct.
Make sure your Remote Access settings are correct.
If you're trying to connect to the Internet or other TCP/IP network, make sure your TCP/IP settings are correct.
Use a communications program to test your dialup modem setup.
If you can, switch the modem off or reset it, then try connecting again.

If you can't hear the modem dialing:
If you're using an internal modem, use the Sound portion of the Control Strip to make sure the computer's sound is on.
Use the Modem control panel to check the modem configuration and make sure the modem sound is turned on.

If your modem won't maintain the connection:
A noisy phone line may be interfering with the connection. Connect a phone to the line and listen for static. Contact your phone company to fix a noisy line.
Make sure you've selected the right modem in the Modem control panel.
If you have call waiting on your phone, an incoming call may interrupt the connection. Turn off call waiting while using the modem.
Check these tips for using modems.

If you can't locate a remote AppleShare server:
A server on the remote network may have the same name as a service on your local network, which will prevent you from seeing the remote server. Change the "Connect via" setting in the AppleTalk control panel to Remote Only.

Open the AppleTalk control panel for me.

If a remote server won't call back:
Check with your network administrator to verify that your callback number is correct.
