Testing your dialup modem setup

To verify that your modem is properly connected to your computer and able to dial out:
1 Make sure that your computer's sound is on and that modem sound is turned on in the Modem control panel.
2 Open a terminal emulation program and switch to terminal mode.
Terminal mode sends the characters you type on the keyboard to your modem and displays them on the screen. Many communications programs provide "terminal emulation." You can use this capability to communicate directly with your modem by first specifying the modem port, then opening a connection to that port.
3 Try dialing your own telephone number by typing "ATDT555-1212" (replacing 555-1212 with your phone number).
If you hear the modem dial, followed by a busy signal, your modem is connected and working properly.
If you do not hear a dial tone, test your telephone line by connecting a working telephone. If there is no dial tone, the telephone line is the source of the problem.
If you hear a dial tone on the telephone, the line may be a digital line, in which case the modem will not work.
Test your modem's telephone cord by using it to connect your telephone to the wall jack. If there is no dial tone, the telephone cord is the source of the problem.
If your modem still has no dial tone, see the service and support information that came with your computer.

IMPORTANT: If your modem needs repair, take it to an Apple-authorized service provider. Do not attempt to repair or reinstall modem hardware yourself.
