Accessing files on other computers

While your computer is connected to a network, you can open or save files in shared folders or volumes on other computers in the network.

Depending on the application you're using, the Open and Save commands in the File menu may display dialog boxes that include a Shortcuts button. If so, you can connect to the server and open or save files from within the application.

To connect to a server from within an application:
Open the File menu and choose the Open or Save command, click the Shortcuts button in the dialog box that appears, then choose Network (for AppleShare servers) or another file service (FTP, for example) offered by the application.

If your application doesn't offer the Shortcuts button:
You need to connect to the server first, then open the file from within the application.

To connect to an AppleShare server:
Open the Chooser, select the AppleShare icon and the zone (if any) where the server resides, then select the server. To use TCP/IP instead of AppleTalk, click the Server IP address button and enter the server's address.

You can also use the Network Browser application to locate and open shared folders and volumes offered by AppleShare servers or other file services (like FTP).

Tip: To avoid typing a password every time you access a network server, create a keychain that contains your passwords for frequently accessed volumes.
