Formatting a document in multiple columns

An AppleWorks word-processing document is preset to contain only one text column. You can create as many as nine columns.

To control how text flows in columns, use column breaks.

Tip: You can use different numbers of columns in different parts of the same document by creating sections.

Creating standard columns

To add or delete columns of equal width:
Click a column control on the text ruler.
    A Removes columns
B Number of columns in the document or current section
    C Adds columns
Note: If your document was already divided into columns of different widths, clicking the column controls in the text ruler equalizes the column widths.

Tip: If you want columns of varied height, use linked text frames in a drawing document.

If you don't see the text ruler:
Choose Rulers from the Format menu, then choose Show Rulers from the submenu.

Creating custom columns

To add, delete, or modify columns of different widths or with custom spacing between them:
1 Choose Section from the Format menu.
2 In the Columns area of the dialog box, type the number of columns you want. Then:
For columns of equal width, type Column Width and Space Between values for the columns.
For columns of different widths, click Variable Width Columns, then choose each column number from the "Settings for Column" pop-up menu. Type values for Column Width, Space Before (to the left of), and Space After (to the right of) the column.
If you specify variable-width columns and want the columns on left- and right-facing pages to mirror each other, select Mirror On Facing Pages.

You can also specify other section attributes in the Section dialog box.

Modifying column width and spacing quickly

To quickly modify column width and spacing without using the Section dialog box:
Press the Option key while positioning the pointer over a column border so that the pointer changes to this double arrow:
Then drag the column border to a new position.

To quickly change the relative width of two columns without changing their combined width or the space between them, without using the Section dialog box:
Press the Option key while positioning the pointer between column borders so that the pointer changes to this double arrow:
Then drag the space between the columns (not the column border) to a new position.
