Inserting footnotes

You can insert footnotes in a word-processing document. When you make changes to a document into which you've inserted footnotes, AppleWorks automatically adjusts their position and numbering.

You can create a footnote in two ways:
Insert a blank footnote and type the footnote text.
Let AppleWorks help you create a footnote that uses the correct format to cite a book, newspaper, or other source.

Inserting and deleting footnotes

    To insert a blank footnote:
1 Click with the I-beam pointer where you want the footnote number or character to appear in the main text area of your document.
2 Choose Insert Blank Footnote from the Format menu.
3 In the footnote area, type the footnote text.
Depending on the options you specify, the footnote appears at the bottom of the page or at the end of the document.
4 To return to the footnote marker in the main text area, press the Enter key (sometimes on the numeric keypad).

To insert a footnote with information about a book, newspaper, or other source:
1 Choose Preferences from the Edit menu, then choose Button Bar from the submenu.
2 Drag the Insert Citation button (in the Word Processing group) from the Available Buttons list to the Button Bar, then click Done.
Tip: You can also double-click the button in the list to add it to the Button Bar.
3 Click with the I-beam pointer where you want the footnote number or character to appear in the main text area of your document.
4 Click the Insert Citation Button Bar button, then follow the instructions in the Footnote Assistant.
Using the information you enter, AppleWorks creates a correctly formatted footnote and places it in the footnote area.

    To delete a footnote:
Delete the footnote number or character in the main text area. This also deletes the corresponding footnote.

If, after you've deleted the footnote number or character, the text you type is too small:
AppleWorks is applying the Footnote Index superscript character style. The easiest way to correct the problem is to backspace into "normal" text and then begin typing again.

Changing footnote options

To change footnote options in a document:
1 Choose Document from the Format menu.
2 In the Footnotes area, specify a location for footnotes and indicate whether you want automatic (sequential) numbering.
To use custom characters instead of numbers to mark footnotes, turn off Automatic Numbering. The next time you insert a footnote, AppleWorks prompts you for the character to use.
