Aligning objects

Aligning objects to one another

To align objects relative to one another or to space them evenly:
1 Select the objects you want to align.
2 Choose Align Objects from the Arrange menu.
3 Select an option in the Top to Bottom area, the Left to Right area, or both.
"Distribute space" places an equal amount of space between the objects, regardless of their size.
4 To preview the new alignment, click Apply.

If you don't see the Arrange menu:
If you see the Transform menu and not the Arrange menu, you are in a painting document or frame and therefore cannot align items. In a painting, you use different methods for selecting, manipulating, and positioning objects. (Because there are significant differences between painting and drawing features, it is important to choose whether you need to paint or draw before you begin creating something.)

Using the graphics grid

The grid lines in the background of a drawing document provide a visual reference to help you align objects.

To show or hide the graphics grid:
Choose Show Graphics Grid or Hide Graphics Grid from the Options menu.

    To change graphics grid settings:
1 Choose Rulers from the Format menu, then choose Ruler Settings from the submenu.
2 If necessary, select Graphics as the ruler type.
3 Enter a new value for the number of Divisions (increments between the main units of measure).
4 Select the desired unit of measure.
