Exchanging documents between Mac OS and Windows
You can open the same AppleWorks document using the Mac OS or Windows version of AppleWorks. You don't need to convert the document from one format to the other. Both computers must have AppleWorks installed.
To exchange a document between computers running Mac OS and Windows:
1 |
Save the document. |
If you're saving a document on a Macintosh for use on a Windows computer, be sure the Windows extension ".cwk" (or ".cws" for template files) appears at the end of the filename. |
The other computer must have the same (or a later) version of AppleWorks. If it's an earlier version, you can save the document in an earlier format (AppleWorks 5.0, ClarisWorks 4.0, or Clarisworks for Kids). |
2 |
Transfer the document from one platform to another, using one of the following methods: |
Copy the document onto a removable disk that both computers can read, and insert the disk into the other computer. It's best to use a Windows-formatted disk because the Macintosh can format and read a Windows disk. (For more information, see the documentation that came with your computer.) |
Copy the document onto a networked server to which both computers are connected. |
Send the document as an attachment to an electronic mail message. Don't compress the file (many file-compression options aren't compatible between Mac OS and Windows). |
If you have access to a Web site, upload the document to the site and then download it to the other computer. (Your Webmaster or other technical advisor can tell you how to upload your files to the Web server.) |
3 |
Open the file as usual. |
Note: You can also open files saved in other file formats. |
Tips for cross-platform compatibility
Formatting and graphics:
Fonts, page margins, page breaks, and graphics may look different after a document is transferred from one platform to another. You can minimize unintended font changes by using TrueType fonts on both platforms. Helvetica on the Mac OS converts well to Arial on Windows, and Times converts well to Times New Roman. To restore the original page breaks, you might need to change the margins and page breaks.
Onscreen colors:
Because of differences in monitors, colors for text and graphics might appear slightly different between the two platforms.
