Summary

With this look at three specific lyases, it becomes clear that this class of enzymes plays many roles in different pathways even though the overall mechanism, cleaving a bond and forming a double bond, is similar. The lyases that were looked at differed in overall structure, cellular location, and pathway. Each enzyme played a unique role that was unlike any of the other lyases looked at. However the cleavage of carbon-carbon, carbon-oxygen, phosphorous-oxygen, and carbon-nitrogen bonds by reactions than by hydrolysis or oxidation remains the same in all the lyases.
