Updating Smart Objects

Smart Objects maintain a link between the source and target files. If you need to update the source file, you can open it in its native application from GoLive. You can also update the target file within GoLive.

Note: On Windows, an SVG file opens in the default browser. You can change the default browser in GoLive by choosing Edit > Web Settings, clicking the File Mappings tab, expanding "image/," and specifying a different application to map to SVG files.

To open a Smart Object in its native application:

    Do one of the following:

    • Double-click a Smart Object in the Layout Editor.
    • Use the contextual menu to choose Source Link, then choose Edit Original or the specific application (Photoshop, Illustrator, or LiveMotion).

Note: In the Layout Editor, when you double-click a PSD file containing JavaScript (like a rollover or an animation), GoLive launches Photoshop (Windows) or ImageReady (Mac OS). In Windows, you would then need to Jump to ImageReady to modify the rollover or animation.

The Smart Object opens in its native application so you can edit the image and save your changes. When you return to the Layout Editor with the Smart Object, GoLive updates the target file to reflect your edits.

Tip icon If the Smart Object's associated application does not open, try the following: Choose Edit > Preferences, expand the General preferences icon, and choose User Interface. Make sure the Launch Other Applications to Edit Media Files option is selected.

To reoptimize or update the target file of a Smart Object:

  1. Select the Smart Object in the Layout Editor.
  2. Click the Settings button in the Inspector.
  3. If the Smart Object is a bitmap image file, the Save For Web dialog box will open. If the image file is in SVG format or SWF format, GoLive will launch the native application that created the file.
