Working with Smart Objects

The image object in the Layout Editor that maintains a link to the target file and the source file is called a Smart Object. The power of Smart Objects is the ability to change the settings to the image file and the ability to make minor modifications (like resizing) in GoLive without ever having to leave the application.

When you double-click a Smart Object in the Layout Editor, the source file opens in the application that created source file--Photoshop, Illustrator, or LiveMotion. If you make changes to the source image, GoLive automatically updates the target file. For more information about working with Smart Objects and other image options such as linking, adding Alt text, and specifying borders, see Additional image options.

Tip icon When you work with images and media files, be sure to have all files placed in your site window, including your source files. You can store the source files in the Smart Object folder within the Site Data folder. Drag source files into the Smart Objects folder in the Extras tab of the site window. Keeping all your files in the site window makes managing image files much easier because all the files are within the hierarchy of your site folders. This prevents broken links (images and media not appearing on your live Web page). If you don't see the files in your site window after adding them to a folder (such as in a folder named "images"), click the Refresh View button Refresh View button in the toolbar. For more information about managing your image files and folders, see About site files and folders and About GoLive sites.
