Chemistry/Biology 491 "Molecules and Medicine"

Herbal-Type Resources: Note; Be careful! Not all of the information in these sites is scientifically based. Very good for some background work, folk and herbal lore, history and reputed uses. I will indicate the most objective resources.
  1. About Herbs, Botanicals & Other Products- a generally authoritative review of the evidence of many popular  herbs from memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
  2. Herbalgram from the American Botanical Council is generally reliable. Only some content is accessible without subscription.
  3. Southwest School of Botanical Medicine Homepage. Stunning photos of herbs are available here! Good links and some great historical documents (see Horsetail and a 1888 Herbal formulary for examples) are available here. Not rigorously scientific.
  4. Medicinal Herb FAQ. Generally good and interesting information from the herbalist perspective. Generally good and authoritative info from this perspective. Part of Henriette's Herbal web site, another good source of historical information.
  5. Ethnobotanical Leaflets- a good historical and anthropological source of info. Real "Medicine Man" type stuff!!
  6. The US Pharmacopea: A reference guide to see whether a given botanical substance is currently recognized as effective in well-designed human trials. Unfortunately most info is by subscription; try the search engine however.
