Description of the biological source and cellular location of topoisomerase I

Topoisomerase I can be divided into two subfamilies - eukaryotic topoisomerase I also known as topoisomerase type IB and prokaryotic topoisomerase I also known as topoismerase type IA (Chen, 1998; Zhu, 1997).  Eukaryotic topoisomerase is found in the nucleus of the cell which is where it acts.  The representative structures from each class of topoisomerase are Escherichia coli DNA topoisomerase I, a member of the type IA subfamily; and human topoisomerase I, a member of the type IB subfamily (Redinbo, 1998; Chen, 1998).
