Managing fonts

Fonts are stored in the Fonts folder in the System Folder on your hard disk. The Fonts folder contains individual fonts, stored in folders, and font suitcases, which usually contain sets of related fonts, or font families. You can store up to 512 fonts or font suitcases in the Fonts folder.

If you want to store more than 512 fonts on your computer, you can arrange them into font suitcases. A font suitcase can hold as many fonts as you like.

    To install a font:
Drag the font or font suitcase to the Fonts folder (or to your closed System Folder).

Creating font suitcases

Creating font suitcases allows you to organize more fonts and store more fonts on your computer.

    To create a font suitcase:
1 Select one of the font suitcases in the Fonts folder in the System Folder on your hard disk.
2 Press Command-D to make a duplicate copy of the suitcase.
3 Click the name of the duplicate suitcase and rename it.
4 Drag the fonts from your new font suitcase to the Trash.
5 Drag the fonts you want to store in your new suitcase onto the suitcase icon.

Identifying font types

To see which type of font you are using:
Select the font in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu.

To see a sample of what the font will look like:
Double-click the font file in the Finder.

There are three basic types of fonts.

Type of font   Best used for
Bitmap font rendering a typeface on your computer screen at a specific point size. The number in the font name indicates the point size (for example, Times 12).

PostScript font rendering a typeface at any size on a PostScript printer. Needs a companion bitmap font installed.

TrueType font rendering a typeface at any size on your computer screen or printer.

    If your fonts look jagged:
You need to install Adobe Type Manager (ATM) or a TrueType version of the font. For more information about ATM, visit Adobe's Web site: http://www.adobe.com

    If your fonts look blurry:
Turn off font smoothing in the Fonts tab of the Appearance control panel.

Open the Appearance control panel for me.
