Using hard disk space as memory

Virtual memory is hard disk space your computer uses as if it were random-access memory (RAM). This disk space is not available for storing files. While virtual memory improves the performance of programs designed for a PowerPC-based computer, using it can make your computer run more slowly.

    To make more memory available:
Turn on virtual memory in the Memory control panel, then restart your computer.
Open the Memory control panel for me.

Note: To use virtual memory, you need free space on your hard disk equal to the total amount of virtual memory you want to use, plus the total amount of built-in RAM you have.

If the computer runs slowly because it is frequently writing to the disk:
Turn off virtual memory in the Memory control panel, then restart your computer.
