Understanding style types and properties

A style is made up of properties. Properties control a single aspect of formatting. For example, one property of a paragraph style might control only the text size. Another property might control the text font. A style can have as many or as few properties as you choose.

In the Styles window, style types are indicated by symbols to the right of the style name for all style types except basic. (Basic styles have no symbol.)

Style types and symbols are described in the table that follows. Refer to the following table as a guide when learning to use styles.

Style type   Represented by this symbol   Formats
basic (top-level items without a symbol are basic) Selected text within a paragraph, selected drawn objects, and selected spreadsheet cells.
You can also use a basic style to apply a background fill and a border style to a selected frame.

paragraph Entire paragraphs in text documents or database (Layout mode). A paragraph style can also include a basic style.

outline The paragraph formatting for each level of an outline.

spreadsheet A selection of cells in a spreadsheet document or frame, or an entire spreadsheet.

table A selection of cells in a table frame, or an entire table.
