Hyphenating words

Using automatic hyphenation

AppleWorks includes a hyphenation dictionary that follows commonly accepted hyphenation rules. You can use automatic hyphenation in word-processing documents, text frames, and database fields.

To automatically hyphenate long words at the end of a line:
Choose Writing Tools from the Edit menu, then choose Auto-Hyphenate from the submenu.

Tip: If you don't like the way a word is hyphenated, edit the word in the hyphenation dictionary.

Hyphenating individual words

You can manually insert an optional hyphen that appears only if the word doesn't fit at the end of a line.

To insert an optional hyphen in a word:
Click where you want the word to break, then press the Command key while typing a hyphen.

Editing the hyphenation dictionary

You can add or remove words in the hyphenation dictionary and change the way existing words are hyphenated.

    To edit the hyphenation dictionary:
1 Choose Writing Tools from the Edit menu, then choose Edit Hyphenation Dictionary from the submenu.
    2 Make the desired changes:
To add a word, type it in the Entry box, putting hyphens between syllables, then click Add.
To change the hyphenation of an existing word, type the word in the Entry box with hyphens in the desired locations, then click Add.
To prevent hyphenation of a word, type the word without hyphens in the Entry box, then click Add.
