You can check spelling in any AppleWorks document type except painting documents.

2 For each word questioned by the spelling checker:
To accept a suggested spelling, select the suggestion and click Replace.
To correct the spelling yourself, type the correction in the Word box and click Replace.
To accept the spelling as is, click Skip.
To accept the spelling as is and add it to the current user dictionary, click Learn.
Tip: To see the word in context, click the triangle in the lower-right corner of the dialog box.

To check the spelling of selected text:
1 Select the text you want to check.
2 Choose Writing Tools from the Edit menu, then choose Check Selection Spelling from the submenu.
3 Respond to questioned words as described above.

Looking up the spelling of a word

To look up the spelling of a word:
1 Choose Writing Tools from the Edit menu, then choose Check Document Spelling from the submenu.
2 Type your best guess of the word's spelling, then click Check.
The Status line indicates whether your spelling is correct. If it isn't, a list of correctly spelled similar words appears. Double-click a word in the list to insert it in your document.

AppleWorks includes a main dictionary and an empty user dictionary to which you can add your own terms. Whenever you check spelling, AppleWorks uses both the main dictionary and the current user dictionary.

You can work with spelling dictionaries in various ways, including selecting different dictionaries, editing a user dictionary, and importing or exporting dictionary terms.
