Phosphotransferases are a second subclass of the transferase family of enzymes responsible for the transfer of phosphorus containing groups. In this example from E. coli, the formation of glucose-6-phosphate from glucose is accomplished by transfer of a phosphate group from a molecule of ATP.
ATP-dependant glucokinase plays only a minor role in glucose metabolism for E. coli, and is known for its strict substrate specificity as compared to hexokinase. The enzyme can be found in the cytoplasm of E. coli, and is normally only very active under conditions of metabolic stress where glucose is not abundant.
