Generating low source images

Not everybody has a fast connection to the Internet and some images have large enough file sizes to cause long download times. Low source images are low-resolution versions of a main image. And, although a low source image takes up the same space on the Web page as the regular image, it downloads quickly because of its small file size. Low source images achieve their small file size by being typically black and white with very low resolution. Once the main image is completely downloaded, it replaces the low source image on the Web page.

You can create your own low source image or GoLive can generate a low source image for you.

To generate a low source image using GoLive:

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Select a Smart Photoshop object or Smart Illustrator object in the Layout Editor, then click the More tab in the Smart Image Inspector.
    • Select a regular (non-Smart) image in the Layout Editor, then click the More tab in the Image Inspector.
  2. Select the Low option and either click the Generate button or specify a file for the desired image.
  3. GoLive generates a low source version of the image you selected and lets you place the file in your images folder.

To make default settings for low source images that appear while the main image is loading:

  1. In the General Image Preferences dialog box, locate the Low Source Image options.
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Select Place in Same Folder as Source to store low-resolution images generated by GoLive in the same folder as the high-resolution source images.
    • Select Place in Import Folder to store low-resolution images temporarily before you move them to the site folder.
  3. Select the Auto-Generate by Default option to instruct GoLive to automatically create a low-resolution copy of each image you import and add it to the page.
  4. Tip iconTo avoid problems in Web browsers, make sure that all your images have the proper extensions to identify their file type; for example, .GIF, .JPG, .JPEG, or .PNG.
