An overview of publishing a site

For the public to view your Web site, the files must reside on an HTTP server. However, it's general practice for the files to be transferred (uploaded and downloaded) via an FTP server. The entire process is called publishing your site. For more information on preparing your site for publication, see Cleaning up a site and Fixing site errors.

To prepare a site for publication:

  1. If necessary, clean the site.
  2. You clean a site to make sure the listings in the primary site window reflect its current contents. Along with errors such as broken links and missing pages, you may need to check the site for unresolved pending links. Also, make sure that the JScript Library has been flattened.

  3. Check the site for errors.
  4. If necessary, export the site.
  5. Exporting a site is converting it to a structure suitable for the particular FTP server to which you are uploading it. (See Exporting a site.)

Tip iconThe export step is rarely necessary. Consult your server administrator to find out if it's required.

To publish a site:

  1. Connect to the FTP server using the GoLive FTP tab.
  2. Upload or update the site.
