Finding applications to open files

When automatic file translation is turned on, you can open most documents on your computer even if you don't have the applications that created them. When you try to open such a document, a list appears showing which applications you can use to open the document. Your computer uses translation extensions to translate the document into a format the application can read.

You set whether files are automatically translated in the File Translation section of the File Exchange control panel.

Open the File Exchange control panel for me.

To turn on automatic file translation:
Click "Translate files automatically" in the File Translation tab.

To change the application assigned to a file type:
Select the file type in the File Translation section of the File Exchange control panel and assign a different application.

Tip: For more help using the File Exchange control panel, open the Help menu and choose Show Balloons. Then, point to the feature or menu item you're interested in.
