Linking text frames

Using linked text frames, you can divide a body of text into separate blocks or "columns" that you can resize to different heights and widths, arrange on the page as you like, or move to other pages. Text that won't fit in one frame flows into the next frame.

You can link new frames to an existing text frame or create empty linked text frames and add text to them.

IMPORTANT: You cannot link two existing frames to each other. To link existing frames to each other, create new linked frames and copy the existing frame content into them.

Linking to an existing text frame

To link a new frame to an existing text frame:
1 Select the frame you want to link.
2 Choose Frame Links from the Options menu.
3 Click the link indicator at the bottom of the frame:
4 Move the pointer to a new location and drag to draw a new linked frame.

Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you have as many linked frames as you want.

Tip: The frame link indicator symbols are helpful for determining the first and last frames in a linked series, and if the last frame has run out of room.

Tip: At any time, you can click the link indicator at the bottom of a frame and drag to draw another linked frame.

Creating linked text frames

To create empty linked text frames:
1 Choose Frame Links from the Options menu.
2 If the Tools window is not open, choose Show Tools from the Window menu, or click the toolbox icon at the bottom of the active document:
3 Select the text frame tool:
4 Drag to draw the frame. If you're creating a frame of the same type as the document (for example, a text frame in a word-processing document), hold down the Option key while you drag.
5 Click outside the frame to display the link indicators.
6 Click the link indicator at the bottom of the frame:
7 Move the pointer to a new location and drag to draw a new linked frame.

Tip: In a drawing or database document, you do not see empty linked text frames when you click the link indicator. To display the frames, choose Select All from the Edit menu.
