Moving objects

Moving objects freely

    To move an object freely:
Select the object and drag it to a new location. (For transparent objects, drag the border.)
Tip: To constrain the object's motion to horizontal or vertical, hold down the Shift key as you drag.
Tip: To see the outline of the object while you drag (rather than a dashed rectangle), hold down the Command key.

Note: You can also move layered objects backward or forward.

Moving objects in small increments

To move an object in small increments:
Select the object and press one of the arrow keys.
The object moves one pixel at a time (or, if autogrid is turned on, one grid unit at a time).

Moving objects to a precise location

To move an object to a precise location:
    1 Select the object.
2 Choose Object Size from the Options menu.
3 Specify the new location in the appropriate box or boxes:
Distance of left edge from left margin
Distance of top edge from top margin
Distance of right edge from left margin
Distance of bottom edge from top margin
    Degrees rotated from current position
4 To apply the new positioning, press the Tab key or close the Object Size window.
Tip: To change the unit of measurement used in the Object Size window, choose Rulers from the Format menu, then choose Ruler Settings from the submenu. Under Unit, click a new unit of measurement.
Note: The other boxes in the Object Size window allow you to resize objects by specifying dimensions.

    If you can't select something:
If you see the Transform menu and not the Arrange menu, you are in a painting document or frame and must use a different method for selecting items. (Because there are significant differences between painting and drawing features, it is important to choose whether to paint or draw before you begin creating something.)
