old guyDr. Scott Hartsel, Professor and Chair

    Hobbies, etc.

    • I  enjoy rollerblading, cooking and acting (and singing and dancing) on stage! I like furry bunnies and dislike negative people.
    • My stage "career"? Well, you might have seen me in the ECCT productions of the Wizard of Oz or as a Singin' Noah in the great Stephen Schwartz musical Children of Eden.  I was the Baker and other assorted food-service workers in Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, put on by Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild. What's then? Nina and I appeared in the poignant and timely play "Sadako and the 1000 Cranes" with Nina as Sadako. Recently we have been in "Babes in Toyland" and next up was "The King And I"(I'm the lump being stepped on) in February '04 and "Guys and Dolls" as Benny Southstreet in April '04. And in June '04 I hade a few unusual roles in ByeByeBirdie (Navy Guy with Nina) and (Old Soldier) and (Shriner). In Fall 2004 we were in "And then they came for me ...Remembering the World of Anne Frank." I  was in a stage adaptation of "It's a Wonderful Life" in Christmas of 2004.  The director thought I was a natural to play Mr Gower the drunk and disreputable pharmacist. Hmmmm.  Last summer I was Mayor of Whoville in Seussical with all three daughters!  I was proud of my daughters, but what did they think of me?? I was also in (get out your insulin) "The Sound of Music." I played the submicroscopic role of Baron Elberfeld (1 scene, 2 lines), but my daughter Rozzy was the real star as the "cute" von Trapp daughter, Gretl. See us here backstage. You'll never see me in a tux again!! My spring '06 theater excursion put me in "Jesus Christ Superstar." This sold-out show found me as an evil pharisee (perfect for a chemistry professor). Not only did I meet Jesus, I got His autograph too! I was made up to look like Edward Scissorhands as a priest. See JC and I here and King Herod and I here. We recently finished a run of Beauty and the Beast. This picture shows me as either Crazy Old Maurice with the "real" daughter or Men in Tights, the Golden Years. Here are some albums of my inglorious career if you need more: Hartsel's Brief Tragic Career in Theater I and Brief, Tragic Career in Theater II and Brief, Tragic Career in Theater III .
    • I'm not sure whether to be proud of this or not, but my students of summer 1997 and myself won a "Dishonorable Mention" in the famous Bulwer-Lytton Wretched Writing Contest. See it here by clicking Baron Bulwer-Lytton himself a if you dare!
