How to differentiate related varieties: Persicaria amphibia var. emersa has a terrestrial habitat, whereas Persicaria amphibia var. stipulacea has an aquatic habitat, though it can be stranded on land. P. amphibia var. emersa has inflorescences 4 to 11 cm which may reach up to 15 cm, whereas P. amphibia var. stipulacea has shorter inflorescences 1 to 4 cm but can range up to 6 cm in length.
