To help distinguish var. alba from var. virginiana, the former has deep green terminal leaflets that are thinly pubescent, with leaf margins near the stem concave or straight-sided, and further from the stem incised, whereas var. virginiana has light green terminal leaflets that are varyingly pubescent, with leaf margins near the stem convex or straight-sided, and further from the stem lobed or serrate. Lengths of anthers and sepals can also aid in identification of particular varieties.
