How to differentiate related varieties: Ageratina altissima var. altissima has phyllaries 3 to 5 mm in length, with apices not cuspidate, whereas Ageratina altissima var. roanensis has phyllaries 4 to 7 mm in length, with apices cuspidate to acuminate (FNA). There is a third variety, not listed in the FNA, Ageratina altissima var. angustata, which has a range of Central & SE. USA according to Plants of the World Online. The Flora of Wisconsin lists Ageratina altissima subsp. altissima, but this is not recogized by the IPNI or the FNA.
