     Genus: From Greek schoinos meaning rush or reed and plectos meaning plaited or woven. Rush is used to describe plants growing in or very near water with stiff hollow stems. The second part may describe the use of culms to form mats and other woven items. It has also been suggested that plaited supposedly describes the mat forming rhizomes.
    Specific epithet: Named for Jacob Theodore Mueller von Bergzabern (1525 – 1590), German physician, herbalist, and botanist. He was called Tabernaemontanus.
