    Specific epithet: Latin for column-bearing, referring to the growth habit of the plant.
Common name origin: For the common habitat. Coneflower is the vernacular name for species in several different genera having flowers with a central cone of disc florets.

Ethnobotany: No recorded uses by tribes from Wisconsin. Several tribes including the Cheyenne, Dakota, Keres, Lakota, Navajo, and Zuni used the plant to treat a number of ailments including ivy rash, snakebite, chest pains, wounds, headaches, stomachaches, fever, and others (Moerman, p. 469, 1998).
