Common name origin: For the Silky plume-like appearance, its membership in the grass family Poaceae, and the Amur region of Russia along the Amur river bordering parts of Russia and China, one of the native regions of this species.

Similar species (if any): Miscanthus sinensis (Chinese Silvergrass, Eulalia) has some resemblance to Miscanthus sacchariflorus, though it has not been observed in Wisconsin, Minnesota, or Iowa, but reported in Michigan, Illinois, and a number of eastern US states and in California. Miscanthus sacchariflorus has callus hairs from 2 to 4 times as long as the spikelets, whereas Miscanthus sinensis has callus hairs from twice as long to shorter than the spikelets.
