     Genus: Latin derived from the Greek ἶψ (ips) a worm and ὅμοιος (ómoios) for similar, hence worm-like, referring to the appearance of the vine.

Common name origin: From its widespread occurrence, in both native and introduced environments. Morning glory is used to describe a number of climbing plants with trumpet-shaped flowers, in particular, for species of the genus Ipomoea. The flowers will open in the morning and can often fade later in the day.

Similar species (if any): Ipomoea hederacea (Blue Morning Glory) may resemble Ipomoea purpurea. The flowers of Ipomoea hederacea are typically blue, but they may also be purple. The leaves of Ipomoea hederacea are commonly lobed and the calyx lobes are long and slender, whereas the leaves of Ipomoea purpurea are commonly unlobed and calyx lobes are triangular.
