Common name origin: From its close to the ground habit, and false indicates its lack of ability to climb up other vegetation like the hedge bindweed Calystegia sepium.

Similar species (if any): The flowers of Calystegia spithamaea resemble those of Calystegia sepium (Hedge Bindweed). Calystegia spithamaea has a low growth habit, and leaves that are oblong-cordate in shape, whereas Calystegia sepium is a vine typically 3 to 10 feet long with arrow-shaped leaves.
