     Genus: From the name Artemis, Greek goddess of hunting, wild nature, and chastity, or (in Roman mythology) Diana. Referring to the gynaecological use of a species of the genus Artemisia (possibly mugwort, A. vulgaris), and its association of Artemis as a protectress during childbirth.
    Specific epithet: Latin for common.
Common name origin: Mugwort is a compound word with a German origin. The first part possibly refers to gnats and the second part to plant. The plant apparently attracts flies and midges. It appears in old English with a number of spelling variations.

Similar species (if any): No close lookalikes. The divided leaves help to differentiate this species from other members of the Artemisia genus.
Ethnobotany: No recorded usess by tribes in Wisconsin. Utilzed by various tribes including the Karok, Kiowa, Miwok, and others, to treat a numer of ailments including colds, rheumatism, backache, knee-ache, and others (Moerman, p. 103, 1998).
