Scientific name origin:
     Genus: The classical name is hierakion, derived from the Greek hierax, for hawk. The Roman naturalist Pliny claimed that hawks fed on Hawkweed to ehhance their eyesight.
    Specific epithet: Long-haired, refers to the very long hairs on the stem and leaves.
Common name origin: From the very hairy appearance, paricularly in the basal region, and its grouping in the Hieracium (Hawkweed) genus.

     Size: 0.5 to 0.6 inches (1.3 to 1.5 cm)
     Petal count: typically 30 to 40 ray florets, up to as many as 60 to 90. There are no disk florets.

     Stem hairy: Densely covered in hairs. For the lower stem they are 6 to 15+ mm in length, for the upper stem they are 3 to 10+ mm in length.

Similar species (if any): While the flowers of Hieracium longipilum have some resemblance to other Hieracium species, the dense covering of long hairs, particularly on the lower stem and basal leaves, makes this species easy to identify.
