Internet location files

You can create files that point to your favorite locations and addresses on the Internet or on a local area network. When you double-click an Internet location file, your preferred browser or other networking application connects to a location on the Internet or local network, or opens a new email message.

To create an Internet location file:
Select a single Internet address and drag the selection to the desktop or Finder window.

When you create an Internet location file, it is named with the first 30 characters of the URL.

There are eight different kinds of Internet location files:

    Web page locations
    (such as http://www.apple.com)
    email addresses
    (such as mailto:John@mail.apple.com)
    news locations
    (such as news:news.apple.com)
    FTP locations
    (such as ftp://ftp.apple.com)
    AppleShare server locations
    (such as afp:/at/Software/IL6)
    AppleTalk zone locations
    (such as at://IL6)
    file locations
    (such as file://FastCPU/Desktop%20Folder/WebSharing.html)
    Internet locations
    (such as <unknown URL type>://why.not.com)

If you can't create an Internet location file:
The application program you are using does not let you use this feature.

If you get text clippings instead of Internet location files when you drag the text of Internet addresses to your desktop:
Internet addresses (URLs) cannot contain spaces or special characters (such as $-_!*'). If a filename contains such a character, replace it with "%xx" notation, for example file://acme/Project%20Status.htm
