Adjusting external speakers or headphones

To adjust sound settings for external speakers or headphones, use the Speakers section of the Sound control panel.

Open the Sound control panel for me.

Tip: You can balance the sound levels between speakers using the sliders under each speaker. To adjust the balance of a pair of speakers or the two sides of your headphones at once, hold down the Shift key as you move the slider.

If you can't hear any sound:
Make sure the speakers or headphones are firmly connected.
Make sure the Main Volume control is turned up and the sound is not muted in the Sound control panel.
Make sure the speakers or headphones in the Speakers section are turned on. Images that appear dimmed in the Speakers section are off. Click the image to turn the speaker or headphones on.
Make sure the settings on the speakers or headphones in the Speakers section are not turned down too low

If sound still comes out of the computer speaker:
Plug your headphones into the headphone jack on the front of your computer.
You may need to mute the computer's speaker. Select the Mute checkbox in the Sound control panel.
If your computer has a subwoofer and you want sound to come only out of the headphones, you may need to turn down the subwoofer volume. To turn down the subwoofer volume, turn the knob in the subwoofer balance control port, or use the Speakers section of the Sound control panel.
