Using other audio equipment with your computer

With most computers you can connect audio equipment to the sound input port, USB port, FireWire port, or audio input port, if you have one. To play or record sound from an external sound source, you use an application program that can record or play sound, such as SimpleSound.

Before you record sound from external equipment, you need to select it as your sound input device.

To select external audio equipment as your sound input device, use the Input section of the Sound control panel.

Open the Sound control panel for me.

If you can't change the sound source:
Deselect the "Check signal level" option in the Input section of the Sound control panel. Try quitting all open applications and turn off any control panels that may be using sound, such as the Speech control panel.

    If the sound is distorted:
Use only equipment that provides line-level output, not amplified output.
