Printing

You can print the contents of most documents, the entire desktop, or the contents of any window on the desktop.

To print most documents, you must have the application that created the document (or another application that can open and read the document) on your hard disk. Exceptions include EPS, JPEG, and PostScript™ files.

IMPORTANT: Before you can print, you need to select a printer using the Chooser or Desktop Printer Utility. If you want to print on a printer using infrared technology, you need to make sure your computer and printer are set up correctly for printing on an IrDA printer.

Printing documents

    To print an open document:
Click in the document's window, then open the File menu and choose Print.

To print a closed document on the desktop:
Select the document's icon, then open the File menu and choose Print.
Note: If Simple Finder is turned on, you need to turn it off (in the Finder's Preferences window, in the Edit menu) before you can do this task.
Turn off Simple Finder for me.

Tip: If you've selected a desktop printer, you can also print a document from the desktop by dragging the document's icon to the desktop printer icon.

Printing the desktop

To print a picture of the desktop:
Click any icon on the desktop, then open the File menu and choose Print Desktop.
Note: If the Simple Finder is turned on, you need to turn it off before you can do this task (in the Finder's Preferences window, in the Edit menu).
Turn off the Simple Finder for me.

To print the contents of a window:
Use the commands in the View menu to sort and display the items in the window as you like, then open the File menu and choose Print Window.

Managing print jobs on a desktop printer

If you're printing on a desktop printer, you can see which of your documents are waiting to print, change the print order, or cancel print jobs in the desktop printer window.

To view or change the status of print jobs:
    Double-click the desktop printer's icon.
To learn how to control the way waiting documents are printed, open the Help menu and choose Show Balloons, then point to the items in the desktop printer window.

To change the default desktop printer:
Select the desktop printer's icon, then open the Printing menu and choose Set Default Printer.

Tip: You can see which of your documents are waiting to print on a desktop printer, but you can't see the documents other users are printing. To see if a printer is busy, select the desktop printer icon, open the File menu and choose Get Info, then choose Status & Configuration from the submenu.

If you don't want to wait for a busy desktop printer:
You can drag a print job from one desktop printer's window to another desktop printer.
