Problems connecting to the Internet

Problems connecting with a modem

If you can't connect to your ISP:
Your ISP, or Internet service provider, is the company that provides your connection to the Internet. If you have questions about your Internet account, contact your ISP for help.

If you used the Internet Setup Assistant to sign up for an Internet account, information about your ISP is in the My Internet Settings document, in the Internet folder on your hard disk.

If the My Internet Settings document is missing, the file may have been removed or renamed, or you may not have used the Internet Setup Assistant to configure your Internet settings.

Open My Internet Settings for me.

Make sure the information in the Internet control panel matches the information in the My Internet Settings document.

Open the Internet control panel for me.

If you still can't connect, or if your connection is dropped after a few minutes:
There may be too much phone line interference to sustain a connection at speeds above 33.6 kilobits per second (Kbps). To make the modem connect at 33.6 Kbps or lower, choose Apple Internal 56K Modem (V.34) from the modem pop-up menu in the Modem control panel.

If you can connect to your ISP but your browser doesn't display any Web pages:
Make sure you have the correct TCP/IP configuration selected in the TCP/IP control panel.

If you want to monitor a dialup connection attempt:
Use the Remote Access Status program in the Apple menu to connect.

If you can't use the Internet Dialer to connect:
The Internet Dialer application may have been installed on your computer with an earlier version of the Mac OS. The Internet Dialer is no longer compatible with the Mac OS and should not be used to make connections.

If a DNS server can't be found:
The address you entered cannot be found, or your computer is no longer connected to the Internet. Make sure the address is accurate and check that your connection is active.

If the computer is unable to establish a network socket connection:
The computer cannot connect to the Internet. Make sure your modem is set up correctly and turned on and you have the correct TCP/IP configuration selected in the TCP/IP control panel.
