Searching for files
To find a file by its name, content, or a combination of search options, use the Files channel in the Sherlock 2 program (in the Apple menu).
Searching for file names
Searching for content
Searching for files by content searches the file's name or information in the file.
To search for files by content:
1 |
If this is the first time you've searched the content of the disk, you may need to create an index of the disk. |
|
If you have modified files on the disk since it was last indexed and you want to search the modified content, you need to update the index. |
2 |
Click the Files channel. |
3 |
In the search field, type one or more words that appear in the content of the file. |
4 |
Click the Contents button. |
5 |
Click the checkbox next to the disks you want to search. |
|
To search a folder that isn't in the volumes list, drag the folder from the Finder to the volumes list. |
6 |
Click the Search button (it looks like a magnifying glass). |
|
Note: You can save your search criteria for use later. |
If the disk or volume you want to search is not listed:
The content on the disk can't be searched because the disk can't be indexed (it may be a read-only disk or volume, such as a CD-ROM disc, that does not contain an index).
Doing custom searches
To find a file based on multiple criteria (such as content, file name, kind, and size):
|
Follow the steps above, but click Custom instead of Contents, then choose an item from the Custom pop-up menu or click Edit and choose your search criteria. |
|
Tip: For more information about search options, open the Help menu and choose Show Balloons, then point to the item you want to learn about. |
Finding files similar in content
To find files that contain some of the same words as an item in the results list:
|
Select a file in the list of found items and choose Find Similar Files from the Find menu. |
Note: This option is only available for files on indexed volumes.
