Scriptable programs

To be scriptable, a program must have a defined set of AppleScript terms that you can use in scripts for that program.

The Finder (or "desktop") has many AppleScript terms, which let you use scripts to manage files and folders and set preferences on your desktop.

You can also use scripts to automate tasks with these network and Internet programs included with the Mac OS:
    Sherlock
    Users & Groups
    File Sharing
    Remote Access
    Web Sharing

Here are some of the other scriptable programs included with the Mac OS:
    Application Switcher
    Location Manager control panel
    Appearance control panel
    Apple Menu Options control panel
    File Exchange control panel
    Keyboard control panel
    Apple System Profiler
    ColorSync
    Desktop Printing

In addition, the Scripting Additions folder (in the System Folder) includes programs that provide terms you can use in scripts. Scripting additions extend the AppleScript language and are always available, so you don't have to direct commands defined by a scripting addition to a specific application.

Many other programs available for your Macintosh computer are scriptable. To determine if a program is scriptable, see if you can open its dictionary in the Script Editor.
