Getting scripts to speak and listen

The Mac OS includes text-to-speech technology that lets the computer speak text in English and Mexican Spanish. It also includes speech recognition technology that lets it listen for spoken English words.

You can use the Say command in your scripts to speak words. For example, you might have a script speak the results of an action rather than display it in a dialog box.

The Mac OS also includes an application named Speech Listener that defines terms you can use to make scripts listen to text.

To see examples, open the scripts in the Speakable Items folder using (in the Apple menu).

Open the Speakable Items folder for me.

If Speakable Items is not in the Apple menu:
Speech recognition has not been installed on your computer. To add the speech recognition software, use the Mac OS Installer, located on your Mac OS CD or the software install CD that came with your computer.
