Synchronizing the modification times for local and server files

You must keep both local and server files synchronized for GoLive to perform incremental or modified-item uploads. GoLive lets you manually synchronize the modification times for your local site files and server files without transferring data. This is useful for cases in which the modification times of the local and the server files are out of sync even though you know that the files are identical.

Files can get out of synchronization in a variety of ways. For instance, if you use an FTP client other than GoLive to upload the file, and later try to synchronize the file from within GoLive, your local file appears older than the server file. The local file appears older because GoLive still refers to the timestamps it created the last time it uploaded the file. In order to keep the files synchronized, GoLive will try to download the server file that appears to be newer. Such downloads are unnecessary and might take a long time if multiple files are involved.

To manually synchronize modification times without transferring files:

  1. With the site open and GoLive connected to the FTP server, do one of the following:
    • Choose Site > FTP Server and then choose either Sync Modification Times Selection or Sync Modification Times All (to synchronize the entire site).
    • Select a file, a folder, or a selection of files and folders in the Files tab of the site window. Then, use the contextual menu to choose FTP Server and choose either Sync Modification Times Selection or Sync Modification Times All (to synchronize the entire site).
  2. In the Sync Times Options dialog box, select from one of the following options, then click OK:
    • Honor Publish State Of refers to the publish states for individual files and folders that can be set in GoLive. To override individual publish state settings for files and folders, deselect the respective options. (See Assigning publish states to files and folders.)
    • Show List Of Files To Upload displays a list of files to be uploaded before you start the actual transfer. You can exclude individual files by deselecting each file in the list.
    • Show Options Dialog displays the Upload Options dialog box before starting the file transfer. This lets you review your upload options at the time of each upload.
  3. If necessary, select or deselect the files to synchronize in the Synchronizing Files dialog box, then click OK.
  4. If you chose Sync Modification Times All and wish to exclude a file from synchronization, deselect the check box next to the desired file in the Synchronizing Files dialog box, then click OK.

Note: Be aware that synchronizing modification times for an entire site changes the modification dates of all files, including any that have been edited but not yet uploaded to the server. These files will not be uploaded by GoLive the next time you do an update because the modification times of the local files will match those on the server. Therefore, use the Sync Modification Times command with caution. If an upload gets interrupted, make sure you don't apply the Sync Modification Times command to files that weren't uploaded.
